Blast Mitigation using BlastGard MTR Series Bomb Proof Trash Cans

Trash Receptacles, a necessity for public waste management, pose a serious threat to Public Safety considering how easily they can conceal an explosive device planted by a terrorist. The BlastGard MTR series of bomb proof trash cans dramatically reduces all lethal threats posed by the detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED); namely, primary fragments, secondary fragments, mechanical effects (shock/blast pressure) and thermal effects (contact and radiation burn) from the fireball, afterburn and resultant post-blast fires.

Click here to view the Technical Product Specifications Sheet.

The Threats

There are four hazards from an improvised explosive device (IED) when detonated in a trash receptable:
  • Primary fragments (parts of the IED device that tend to be small and travel at high velocity)
  • Secondary fragments (parts of the bin that tend to be larger and travel at a lower velocity)
  • Blast pressure
  • Thermal effects
Existing bomb proof trash cans only deal with the first two components of an explosion, namely: primary and secondary fragmentation; whereas, The BlastGard MTR Series of blast-resistant and blast-mitigated trash receptacles effectively manage all of the blast threats.

Extensively tested by government agencies

  • Our patent-pending blast-mitigating technology, BlastWrap, and its BlastGard Mitigating Trash Receptacles were designated Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technologies and placed on the "Approved Products List for Homeland Security." We were issued the "Designation" and "Certification" for our technology by the Department of Homeland Security under the Support Anti-Terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies Act of 2002 (the SAFETY ACT).
  • Extensively tested by the U.S. Army Developmental Test Command's Redstone Technical Test Center at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama and at Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center in Socorro, NM.
  • Tests witnessed by US Office of Naval Research (EOD Section) and Dept. of Homeland Security.
  • Test charges shot on midpoint, bottom center, and sidewall on the weld seam.
  • All sidewall and bottom tests were in-contact blasts, the most severe test of all because of shock-holing.

New BlastGard MTR® Bomp Proof Trash Can Lid Designs

Our standard cover has a single front entry but can be made with 2 side entries for trash placement. BGI has also designed new covers / lids which are for use inside a building. The new lid designs include an 8 inch diameter open hole in the top, allowing for 360 degree trash collection. An insert may be placed into the 8 inch diameter doughnut hole, which allows for the trash receptacle to be converted into a recycling unit for plastic drinking cups and bottles. To provide for newspaper recycling, a specially designed BlastWrap lid with an aperture of 1 7/8 inches by 18 inches for newspapers only may be requested.

BlastGard MTR® Bomb Proof Trash Can Ratings & Dimensions

BlastGard International and Centerpoint Manufacturing will not publicize or disclose specific deployment locations to the private sector.

Due to the sensitive nature of this technology, BlastGard International and Centerpoint Manufacturing will not publicize explosives containment ratings of our MTR models. Requests for the explosives containment ratings and official test reports must be made in writing. All requests will be evaluated on a case by case basis. Bottom center, side wall weld seam, side wall opposite weld seam, and midpoint center detonations are all essential tests for determining an accurate explosive containment rating. Since we cannot control where within a trash receptacle a terrorist is going to drop their explosive device, all four tests are required to obtain an accurate explosive containment rating...to assure that the MOST VULNERABLE receptacle locations meet or exceed the rating level.

BlastGard MTR® Bomb Proof Trash Recptacle Features

  • Triple Wall Technology, to withstand various charge weight capacity explosions (tested on Bottom Center, Sidewall Weld Seam, and Midpoint) without Horizontal Fragmentation.
  • Weatherproof cover designed for easy service and minimum maintenance.
  • Galvanized edges, walls and drains provide corrosion resistance in most environments.
  • Sturdy galvanized exterior walls are factory covered with standard color and texture laminates. Laminates can also be custom designed with special art, logos or official seals (100 Piece Minimum). Dings and dents will be minimized with laminate over metal and they also resist fading compared to painted surfaces.
  • Laminated exterior can be replaced by a local laminator if damaged or color schemes are revised.
  • Galvanized metals may also be finished by the factory with optional anti graffiti paints.
  • Brushed stainless steel finish exterior is available as an option and recommended for coastal or harsh outdoor environments.
  • Attractive HDPE top conceals additional mitigating materials while hiding unsightly trash. Top stays attached with provided hinge during bag change and clean up. The top is hinged in rear as standard but may be ordered with hinge point on the left or right side of trash entry port. A plastic liner accepts multiple garbage bags at the same time, which are easily removed when full. Attendant can easily remove a full bag to prevent an explosive being placed above containment area during peak usage.
  • Plastic liners are full capacity thirty-five (35) or forty (40) gallon, not nominal sizes.
  • Plastic garbage bags are easy to remove and multiple garbage bags are held in place to provide primarily remove-only maintenance.
  • Flexible internal drainage through bottom with or without anchoring. Spillage can also be stored internally for later clean up and wash down.
  • Easy on-site placement, leveling, and anchoring with single point pickup and stainless steel anchor, which resists over 4000 pounds of shear (horizontal) or tension (vertical) force.
  • Installation and Maintenance instructions included with every order. Technical assistance is also available at no charge via email or phone. On site supervision and/or installation services can be provided for a fee.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant.
  • Dimensions of 36" units with side insertion MTR top: 30" diameter and 38" height to trash insertion port. Overall maximum height with top in place is 52". Dimensions of 36" units with top insertion MTR top is 10 inches. Deduct 4 inches from these dimensions when considering the 32" high can.
  • Designed, built, and tested in the USA using only US purchased materials.
  • Weight: Starting at 1000 lbs.
  • Custom Designed Lifting Tool is provided with every order. Moving and installing these receptacles is simplified with inexpensive, readily available equipment.
